Terms

The terms, in plain words.

What you get, what we promise, and the handful of things you should know before you rely on a number this app produces.

Draft — pending review by counsel

This document was prepared from the app's own technical audit and has not yet been reviewed by a lawyer. It is published so it can be read and corrected. Do not treat it as final, and do not submit it to an app store, until counsel has signed it off.

1. What ShiftStub is

ShiftStub is an app that records the shifts you work and calculates what you have earned. It keeps your record on your phone and shows you the arithmetic behind every figure.

By using it, you agree to what is on this page.

2. What ShiftStub is not

This is the most important section on the page, so it is near the top.

  • It is not your payroll provider. It does not pay you, it does not talk to your employer, and it has no access to your employer's systems.
  • It is not legal advice. It describes rules and does arithmetic. It cannot tell you what you are legally owed, and nothing it shows you is a determination that anyone did anything wrong.
  • It is not tax advice. It computes gross pay — what you earned. Any take-home figure is an estimate and says so.
  • Your employer's own check and your own records govern. If they disagree with this app, that is a question to ask, not a fact you have proved.

If you think you have been underpaid, the right next step is a conversation with your employer, your union, or your state labour agency — with this app's arithmetic as a starting point.

3. There is no account

You do not sign up for anything and there is nothing to log into. That also means there is no account for us to suspend, and no way for us to recover your data if you lose your phone and have no backup or export. Keep a backup on.

4. The numbers depend on what you put in

The app calculates from what you tell it: your hours, your rates, your pay rules, your breaks. If a rate is out of date or a rule is set wrong, the answer will be wrong in the same way. The app shows you every figure's working precisely so you can check it.

Pay rules are set up from presets by state and employer type. Those presets are a starting point, not a legal opinion about your job, and you can change any of them.

5. Subscriptions

The pay math, automatic backup and plain-text export are free. Pro is optional.

$29.99 a year
Renews yearly until you cancel.
$4.99 a month
Renews monthly until you cancel.
$49.99 once
One payment. Yours forever. Nothing renews.
  • The store bills you, not us. Purchases are handled by the App Store or Google Play, and your subscription is managed in your store account.
  • There is no free trial. We do not ship one, so there is nothing that starts charging you when you stop paying attention.
  • There is no weekly plan, and there will not be one.
  • Cancel any time, in your store account. A subscription runs to the end of the period you have paid for.
  • Refunds are the store's. Apple and Google handle them under their own policies. The app does not argue with you about it.
  • Restore purchases is on the paywall and in Settings. A lifetime purchase restores on any device signed in to the same store account.
  • If a payment fails there is a 16-day grace period. Pro stays on, and you get one quiet banner about it. No repeated nagging.
  • Price changes follow the stores' own notice and consent rules, and existing subscribers are grandfathered by default.

6. If Pro lapses

Features stop. Your data never locks.

  • A second job becomes read-only. It stays visible, and it stays exportable.
  • PDF and spreadsheet export go back to the plain-text share, which is free and always has been.
  • Sync pauses. Both phones keep working on their own local data.
  • Rule sets you have already applied stay applied.

Nothing is deleted, hidden, or held hostage.

7. What stays free

The whole pay engine, your next-check figure and its math, automatic backup, and plain-text timesheet export are free, and they stay free. No feature that is free today will move behind the paywall later.

8. Using it properly

Please do not:

  • use the app to track or monitor somebody else's work without their knowledge;
  • take the app apart, or work around the parts that are paid for;
  • use it to break the law, or to harass anyone.

ShiftStub is deliberately a worker's tool. It has no employer or manager features and we do not intend to build any.

9. What we are responsible for

We work hard to make the arithmetic correct — the pay engine is tested against roughly 1,300 cases and re-tested on every change. But software has bugs, phones fail, and no calculator can know what your employer will actually pay you.

The app is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for lost wages, lost data, disputes with your employer, or decisions you make based on a figure the app produced. Where the law does not allow us to exclude something, we do not try to.

Needs counsel The precise wording, scope and any cap on liability in this section must be settled by a lawyer before this page goes live.

10. Changes to these terms

If these terms change, the new version appears here with a new date, and the app links to it. A change that affects what you have paid for will be communicated in the app, not just posted.

11. Governing law

Placeholder TBD — to be set by counsel and the owner.

This has deliberately not been guessed. It depends on where the owner is established, and it is a decision for the owner and counsel together.
